Chelsea’s season drifted further into further uncertainty as Brighton delivered a decisive 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium, a result that deepens concern around Liam Rosenior’s side. Five consecutive Premier League defeats now define a run that once promised much more, but now threatens to unravel entirely.
Brighton wasted no time asserting control. Within four minutes, Ferdi Kadioglu found space and struck goalwards, his effort taking a deflection off Wesley Fofana before beating Robert Sanchez. It was a moment that set the rhythm of the contest, Brighton sharper, Chelsea hesitant.
The visitors struggled to respond with any conviction. Even when Sanchez produced a couple of notable saves, including one to deny Kaoru Mitoma, there was a sense that Chelsea were reacting rather than shaping the game.
Chelsea’s midfield lacked both clarity and authority. Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia were frequently bypassed, leaving gaps Brighton were eager to exploit. Enzo Fernandez, operating further forward, could not impose himself on proceedings.
Brighton’s midfield, orchestrated by Pascal Gross, displayed a composure that Chelsea could not match. The home side moved the ball with purpose, creating angles and opportunities that eventually told.
Jack Hinshelwood doubled Brighton’s lead early in the second half, redeeming an earlier miss with a composed finish past Sanchez. It was a goal that reflected Brighton’s persistence and Chelsea’s defensive fragility.
Chelsea’s attacking play offered little threat. Liam Delap was isolated, receiving minimal service, while Pedro Neto’s decision making faltered in key moments. The introduction of Alejandro Garnacho added some urgency, but by then the contest had slipped beyond reach.
Danny Welbeck’s late goal in stoppage time added further gloss to Brighton’s performance and underlined Chelsea’s defensive disorganisation.
The reaction from the travelling supporters spoke volumes. Discontent was audible, directed firmly at Rosenior as Chelsea slipped further away from their top five ambitions. Now sitting seventh, Brighton have overtaken them, leaving Chelsea with mounting questions and dwindling answers.
