Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez was back among the goals as the Nerazzurri sealed a 2-0 victory away to Cagliari in Serie A but the Argentine praised youngster Francesco Pio Esposito after the game.

The Argentine forward struck early to put Cristian Chivu’s men in control before youngster Pio Esposito scored his first ever Serie A goal late on to secure the result.

The win makes it three consecutive victories for Inter, who now turn their focus to midweek Champions League duties.

For Lautaro, returning to fitness and finding the net was important but the captain was just as keen to highlight the performance of his 20-year-old teammate.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, with quotes via FCInterNews, Lautaro praised Esposito’s contribution.

“I’m very happy for Esposito and for his first goal in Serie A,” he said.

“Pio is a good kid who works hard. We need to leave him calm so he can grow in the best way. We’ll give him advice, but he needs his space and his time.”

The Argentine also reflected on his own display and the value of the result.

“I had some physical issues recently, but today the team knew it would be a tough game and I tried to give my best.

“I’m happy we got three very important points on a difficult pitch like Cagliari, where matches are always very physical.”

Looking ahead, Lautaro added: “The win today gives us extra morale for the Champions League. We must keep working hard, it will be a complicated match but winning here gives us a big boost.”
