It’s not hyperbole to say that the eyes of the football world will be on Riyadh this week.

Football in Saudi Arabia changed when Cristiano Ronaldo, the most popular player on the planet, signed with Al Nassr as 2022 came to a colossal close, while his arrival in Riyadh was greeted with all the glitz and glamour that you’d expect.

Understandably, it was projected to millions of interested onlookers around the world. And, where Ronaldo led, others have followed.

From Karim Benzema, to Neymar, to Riyad Mahrez, to Nacho, to Joao Felix, to countless other high-profile superstars; they have changed the face, and subsequently profile, of the Roshn Saudi League.

The Saudi top flight is now regularly watched in more around 180 countries worldwide, last season's viewership reaching as high as 230 million.

Moving into the 2025-26 campaign, the RSL boasts an ever-growing international fan base; you can find club jerseys on streets from Seoul to Santiago and London to Los Angeles.

The RSL’s social media accounts have soared to more than 20 million followers, while Thursday's highlights of Al Nassr’s victory at Riyadh rivals Al Shabab, which saw Ronaldo register his 100th RSL goal, clocked 1.6 million views - on par with the best leagues in the world.

Still, for all the 1,000-plus matches played since the great RSL revamp in 2023, the more than 2,500 goals scored, and the three league titles decided, there's arguably been no more headline-grabbing single game than this week’s hotly anticipated Capital Derby between Al Nassr and Al Hilal.

The global TV audience stands to be the largest for any standalone fixture in the RSL record books, with no limit put on how many people will be tuning in from around the world for what could be a slice of football history.

Given the current state of play in the 2025-26 title race, Tuesday night’s cross-city encounter could be the crowning moment of Ronaldo’s time in the Kingdom, that long-awaited piece of major silverware that has eluded him since he first stepped foot out at Al Awwal Park in early 2023.

With Al Nassr holding a five-point lead over Al Hilal at the summit - albeit their rivals do have a game in hand - victory for Jorge Jesus’ side would be enough to secure the title with two full rounds to spare.

On the flipside, however, is the uncomfortable scenario for the yellow half of the capital. Defeat would cut Al Nassr’s advantage to two points and, should Al Hilal see off NEOM Sports Club at home on Saturday, they would usurp their arch-rivals at the top.

While Al Hilal cannot capture the RSL trophy this weekend, for all intents and purposes, this feels a winner-takes-all title decider.

The stakes couldn’t possibly get any higher. The pressure couldn’t seem any more intense. The demand for tickets, meanwhile, could’ve sold the stadium multiple times over. Never in the three years since the elite-star influx into the RSL has there been such a frenzy around one match.

The history of the Capital Derby, forever one of Saudi Arabia’s grandest games, is littered with massive matches with consequential results. But the sense is that no fixture in the storied 68-year history of this rivalry will be as monumental as this one.

From Rio Ferdinand to Usain Bolt, why the season's first Capital Derby was MUST-WATCH.

--------

Riyadh will be brought to a standstill come 9pm on Tuesday night. Those not at the stadium will be watching wherever they can, either at home or in the restaurants and cafes dotted across the capital.

And that is true, not just for Riyadh, but around the world, too. People will be tuning in in their millions to see whether this will finally be Ronaldo’s release, or whether the title race will rumble on towards the final day.

Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: the latest Capital Derby will prove another landmark day for the RSL and for Saudi football.
