When Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as coach, the Romanian had very little coaching experience at senior level.

The Romanian had taken charge of just thirteen matches in his spell with Parma last season.

However, the matches that Chivu had coached had seen the Gialloblu go on an impressive run.

Notably, the 44-year-old guided the Emilian club to Serie A survival.

And perhaps just as significantly, Chivu particularly impressed in matches against the biggest teams.

Parma beat Bologna 2-0 in Chivu’s first match at the helm. That certainly constituted a statement result.

Draws against the likes of Lazio and Napoli were among the results that followed.

Even more notably, Parma came back from 0-2 down at halftime to snatch a point against Inter in April. This will not have gone unnoticed by the Nerazzurri hierarchy.

However, the most eye-catching result that Parma got in the spring was surely their victory over Juventus.

Chivu masterminded a gritty 1-0 win against the Bianconeri which was undoubtedly a key stepping stone to avoiding the drop.

Now, the 44-year-old will be facing Juventus for the second time as coach. Except this time, it will be in the context of the Derby d’Italia.

If Chivu can make it two wins from two against the Bianconeri as a coach, it would certainly bode well for his tenure as Inter coach.
