Leon King is set to be a wanted man in the upcoming summer window

Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are two clubs facing very different preparations in the upcoming summer transfer window, as they swap places in the English pyramid.

The Sky Blues were the standout team in this season's Championship by some distance, echoed by the fact they landed the division's trophy as early as April 21st, before parading it to their supporters at the CBS Arena and throughout the city in the following weeks.

Frank Lampard saw his side accrue 95 points in his first full season in charge of the club, subsequently ending an exile from the Premier League that had lasted for 25 years beforehand.

Unsurprisingly, transfer talk has already been rife as to which players the club are likely to attract in order to stand a chance of avoiding relegation alongside Ipswich Town, who were immediately promoted back to the top-flight.

Wolves, meanwhile, have seen their campaign be well-documented for all the wrong reasons, as they are now gearing up for a first term at Championship level since their own title-winning season under Nuno Espírito Santo eight years ago.

The Old Gold and Black have sat rock-bottom of the table for virtually the entire season under both Vitor Pereira and now Rob Edwards, who is set to undergo a major squad reshuffle in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Several high-profile names have already been linked with potential exits away from Molineux, whilst it remains to be seen which players will be recruited by the 43-year-old in order to aid what many would expect to be a first-time promotion bid of their own.

However, whilst the Black Country side still have three Premier League fixtures to fulfil, it has emerged that they are already in a transfer battle with Coventry.

Coventry City, Wolves become part of 6-way transfer battle for Rangers ace Leon King

That's because, according to TEAMtalk, the West Midlands rivals have become part of a six-way transfer race for the services of Rangers centre-back, Leon King.

It has been claimed that King will be allowed to depart the Scottish Premiership giants at the end of the season, as former Sheffield Wednesday boss, Danny Rohl, undergoes his first pre-season since taking charge at Ibrox last October.

The defender is under contract in Glasgow until the end of next season, but having impressed on loan at Ayr United after falling down the pecking order with the Light Blues, it has also been claimed that his temporary employers have put a permanent contract on the table for the 22-year-old.

However, TEAMtalk's aforementioned report states that, alongside Wolves and Coventry, all of Burnley, Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth have made checks on King ahead of the transfer window.

The centre-back has played 27 times in the Scottish Championship this season for Ayr, scoring twice and receiving three accolades at the club's end-of-season awards.

Beforehand, the Gers academy graduate had made 42 appearances for his boyhood club, which included six in the UEFA Champions League.

Wolves and Coventry City would hope to unearth a gem through potential Leon King transfer moves

Despite having to drop into the Scottish Championship in order to source regular first-team minutes, that hasn't stopped King from being highly-rated, and the likes of Wolves and Coventry would hope to unearth a gem through a reported low-cost move.

It would be intriguing to see if the 11-time Scotland Under-21s international would be able to oust the likes of Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching from Lampard's starting lineup in the Premier League immediately, or whether the best overall move would be to one of the potentially five clubs that could be in next season's Championship, with Middlesbrough set to play Southampton over two legs in the play-off semi-finals.

However, it would also irk Rangers fans if King was to move south of the border and fulfil his potential, with the academy at Ibrox known for producing several stars throughout the years.
