Cristiano Ronaldo has suffered a right thigh injury that is more serious than first thought.

He picked up the problem in Al-Nassr’s last Saudi league match, a 3-1 win over Al-Fayha. According to L'Équipe, coach Jorge Jesus said tests showed it was worse than expected and would require rest followed by a convalescence period.

The initial absence had been estimated at between two and four weeks.

Ronaldo has travelled to Spain to receive treatment in Madrid with his personal physio. There is hope he returns quickly to help the team.

The 41-year-old is three months out from the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, running from 11 June to 19 July. That tournament is viewed as his likely final major objective, so recovery time is at a premium.
