Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been recalled by England for the March fixtures against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley, ending a five-year wait.
The Leeds United striker hit red-hot form in November and December, scoring in six consecutive Premier League games. He has 10 goals from 27 top flight appearances this season and his all-round game has been vital for Leeds in their quest to stay above the drop zone.
Talk of an England call-up and even World Cup involvement grew during that streak, yet just as important was his ability to prove fitness and reliability.
Leeds signed the free agent in the summer following his departure from Everton, confident they could keep him on the pitch, as with injury-impacted stars Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo. Their efforts have not been in vain, with 2,031 minutes of Premier League action.
Thomas Tuchel has named a 35-man squad for the camp and has divided it into two phases, first bringing in players who have not featured much, then adding a rested group before the Japan game.
Calvert-Lewin faces competition for the centre forward role from England’s first-choice striker Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur’s Dominic Solanke.
