Dominik Greif has underpinned Lyon’s climb to third with calm, reliable goalkeeping, ahead of the trip to Toulouse on Sunday at 21.00.

According to L'Équipe, the 29-year-old Slovak will make his 34th appearance of the season there, 27 in Ligue 1, and has kept 11 league clean sheets. Signed for four million euros from Mallorca last summer, he has brought lasting assurance and helped deliver the division’s third-best defence, 34 conceded.

Paulo Fonseca recruited him to be number one, yet he only took over in mid-September after Rémy Descamps, a strong deputy during the bright start to 2025-26, suffered a right wrist injury in the 1-3 loss at Rennes on 14 September. Former Lyon keeper Rémy Vercoutre had long tracked Greif, noting limited minutes in Spain before his full 2024-25 season, and now rates him error-averse, strong on his line and dominant aerially, while urging him to sweep further behind his back line. He also recalls a back problem in 2021.

Former OM and PSG goalkeeper Jérôme Alonzo highlights Greif’s economy and positioning rather than showy saves, and believes his decisive stops are worth roughly seven to eight points. He adds that Greif has given team-mates a serenity Lucas Chevalier could not in Paris, even if he can be reluctant to stray far from his area, perhaps through fear of a red card. On set plays he often punches like Köpke when first to the ball, and in one-on-ones he closes space quickly and forces strikers into risk.

At Décines-Charpieu, Fonseca has demanded more with the ball, and Christophe Lollichon sees cleaner decisions with either foot and composure under pressure. He cites a point-blank stop from Bamba Dieng for Lorient and a habit of attacking crosses early to maximise reach and core strength, turning himself into a barrier for onrushing forwards.
