Manchester City and Norway forward Erling Haaland has seen a court ruling go in his favour after an incessant legal battle over the trademark use of ‘Haaland’.
The 25-year-old’s efforts to register ‘Haaland’ as a trademark in 2023 were met with immediate rebuttal as the Manchester City star was informed that an individual from Poland had already registered the name as a trademark.
The complainant argued that the trademark the striker desired to register for his international brand resembled his own to a problematic extent and a legal battle over trademark rights ensued for months between the Pole and the millionaire footballer.
On September 24, a European court ruled in favour of the Manchester City forward, as per TV2 and relayed by Football Norge, stressing that the Pole complainant’s use of the ‘Haaland’ trademark was invalid and lacked substance.
Haaland’s prowess and success in football was also seen as an appropriate reason for the Manchester City star to win trademark rights to ‘Haaland’, which has propelled a growing business empire around the superstar striking sensation.
The former Borussia Dortmund is believed to be the highest earner in the Premier League after signing a sensational 10-year contract with Manchester City in January, with reports suggesting the forward is on £400,000-per-week at the Etihad Stadium.
Since joining City in 2022, Haaland has spearheaded the Blues to greater heights and having led Pep Guardiola and co to their premier UEFA Champions League title and a historic treble in his debut season in England, the Leeds-born star continues to break record after record on the pitch.
A brace in a 5-1 win over Burnley on Saturday saw Haaland register his name as the highest scoring Norwegian in the Premier League, with the striker also climbing to ninth place in Manchester City’s all-time goalscoring list.
Haaland is entitled fully to use his name for business and marketing purposes as he goes from strength to strength off the pitch to drive greater commercial appeal following his sensational rise to one of the best players in world football – since his move to City three years ago.
Real Madrid and Barcelona hold a long-standing interest in the striker but Haaland committed his long-term future to the club he supported as a child earlier this year and it would take nothing short of a war chest to convince Manchester City to cash in on their talisman.
City have been reliant on Haaland to provide the goods in front of goal since Julian Alvarez’s £82 million exit to Atletico Madrid last summer, with the Norwegian’s importance growing to Guardiola with every passing week.
Manchester City are navigating a period of transition on the pitch and Haaland’s relentless thirst for greatness on the pitch is nothing less than an infinity stone for the Blues in their pursuit of a fifth Premier League title in six seasons next May.
