The defender looked like he was on his way out of the club at one point.

Milan van Ewijk is now looking likely to remain a Coventry City player as his move to German side Wolfsburg has stalled.

A target for a number of teams across Europe's top five leagues this summer, it looked like the Bundesliga was going to be where the right-back ended up.

Wolfsburg were reported to be closing in on a deal for the Dutch defender by Sacha Tavolieri. It was said to be worth just over £10 million, including add-ons, which is a fair few times more than the €4.5 million that Coventry paid for van Ewijk two summers ago.

A four-year deal had been mooted, but, according to a subsequent social media post by Tavolieri, the deal stalled due to the parties not being able to agree on the final terms of the deal.

His old club, Heerenveen, would've been due a percentage of the profit made from van Ewijk had he gone to Wolfsburg. This will still be the case if he is sold by the Sky Blues in the future.

Coventry City told to be buzzing with latest Milan van Ewijk update

Even though Coventry brought in Kaine Kesler-Hayden to challenge the 24-year-old for his starting spot, the Dutchman has emerged as Frank Lampard's clear first-choice option at right-back.

With three assists already this season, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that the supporters will be delighted if van Ewijk stays beyond the end of the summer window.

"Well, there's no doubt it's massive, isn't it, for Coventry to keep a hold of Milan van Ewijk," Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

"He is definitely one of the best right backs in the Championship, if not the best. So for Coventry to be able to keep him is excellent.

"He's already delivering assists this season and high-level performances. The conundrum is for Frank Lampard is with Kaine Kesler-Hayden because I'm pretty confident he was brought in because they were pretty sure that Milan Van Ewijk was not going to be around.

"So it's going to be interesting to see if they move Kaine Kesler-Hayden to the left or if he just has to play second fiddle. Watch this space."

Milan van Ewijk shouldn't be the first full-back that Coventry look to offload

Van Ewijk is one of the stars of the team, which makes it such a shame for Kesler-Hayden that he is most likely going to be stuck behind him for the rest of the season. The ex-Aston Villa player, who can also line up on the opposite flank of the defence, was bought for £3.5 million by Coventry earlier in the summer. You don't spend that sort of money on a back-up.

He can be used on the left too, but Lampard already has three options to choose from in that position. Going into this summer, Coventry had Jake Bidwell and Jay Dasilva on their books. Then they went and brought in Miguel Brau.

Dasilva has started all of their Championship games so far. Brau has been used as the left-back in the EFL Cup. 32-year-old Bidwell, meanwhile, has been played at centre-back.

Coventry probably need to add another option in the middle of defence anyway, so, if any full-back could be moved on, they should see if they can offload the veteran.

Derby County previously held an interest in him, as per the Daily Mail. There would surely be a few EFL sides that would love to reinforce their options with Bidwell in the latter stages of the window.
