Agents’ fees at Aston Villa and Wolves surged across the last two transfer windows, with Villa paying more than £38.4m and Wolves £25.9m.

The FA published figures covering payments between February 4 2025 and February 2 this year. Premier League clubs’ spending rose by more than £50m to £460m, with Chelsea top on £65.1m for the second year running and Villa second.

Wolves’ outlay nearly doubled from £13.5m year on year, the seventh highest total after ranking eighth lowest 12 months earlier.

That period included a summer in which Wolves signed six players, none with previous Premier League experience, and Brazilian forward Jhon Arias departed after six months. Wolves currently sit bottom, with seven matches left and only three league wins.

Villa endured a difficult summer as recruitment was constrained by UEFA’s financial fair play rules. Evann Guessand arrived from Nice in a deal worth nearly £30m, their only major addition, before Tammy Abraham joined for £18.2m in winter. Tyrone Mings, John McGinn and Morgan Rogers signed new contracts during the period.

In the Championship, Albion’s spend fell by nearly half to £1.3m from £2.5m, the sixth lowest in the division, while Ipswich led on £11.7m. Walsall’s total dropped by about £40,000 to £104,000, and Shrewsbury Town’s rose by about £15,000 to £91,500.
