It’s been a tough start to the season on a personal level for Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that could reach £116m during the summer transfer window.

Despite some bright passages of play, the 22-year-old remains without a goal or an assist in the Premier League and Champions League - leading to rival fans and media questioning his arrival.

There is no doubting Wirtz’s talent - and it’s only a matter of time before the 2023/24 German double winner shows what he’s really made of.

A gifted attacker capable of playing left-wing or at No10, Wirtz has been signed on a five-year contract. He will be Liverpool’s creative fulcrum for the long term and one initial spell of indifferent form is not going to change that.

Liverpool demanding more from Wirtz

Fabrizio Romano recently posted a video on his YouTube channel in which he discussed Liverpool’s Wirtz conundrum.

The Italian transfer expert confirmed that Liverpool are sticking by Wirtz - who was rotated out of the lineup for last week’s Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid.

He added however that the Premier League champions are expecting MORE from their former record signing and that Arne Slot is discussing ways to improve his output with the player himself.

Romano: Arne Slot trying to fix Wirtz issues

“Liverpool remain very calm, very confident, and very optimistic,” he said. “They know that Florian Wirtz is not the player we’re seeing in these first weeks in the Premier League.

“He might need some time to adapt to a new league, a different rhythm, and of course a different approach in the Premier League.

“He might need some time to adapt to his new life in football, and not only in England. But they have zero doubts about Florian Wirtz.

“They see how he’s training, they see how serious he is, how hard he works. Liverpool maintain absolute confidence in him.

“They have no doubts, they will keep protecting him, trusting him, and playing him for sure. Arne Slot has no intention to change.

“So yes — Florian Wirtz remains a crucial piece of the Liverpool project. The start has not been what was expected, for sure, but Liverpool keep protecting Florian.

“Arne Slot is talking directly to him almost on a daily basis, trying to support him in the best way possible.

"So Liverpool are not changing their mind. They remain very confident, very optimistic, and convinced that it’s just a matter of time before we see the real Florian Wirtz.”
