ABC News reports that FIFA has tripled the price of Category 1 tickets for the 2026 World Cup final to $32,970, with the showpiece set for 21:00 on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New York’s suburbs.
The governing body had already listed tickets at two million euros on its resale platform. Lower-bowl Category 1 seats have risen from $10,990, roughly €9,300, to about €28,000.
Gianni Infantino defended the approach, saying the United States has one of the most developed entertainment markets and prices should match market rates. He spoke on Tuesday at a global economy conference in Los Angeles.
The hike and opaque pricing have prompted criticism from Democratic members of the US Congress, including from New Jersey. They wrote to Infantino on Thursday, a month out from the 11 June kick-off, seeking clarity on dynamic pricing and resale fees.
The letter notes that FIFA collects a 15% commission on each resale. It also alleges the organisation is artificially restricting supply to shape demand, creating a sense of scarcity that pushes fans to buy quickly at high prices.
