Robin Roefs would be wise to stay at NEC this summer, according to Rogier Meijer in an interview with the Algemeen Dagblad. The former NEC Nijmegen boss believes that a move to Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord isn’t wise for the goalkeeper’s development.

Roefs has had a very strong season at NEC and has earned himself the interest of the Netherlands’ ‘Big Three’. In Nijmegen, they want around 6 million euros for the talented stopper, who will participate with Jong Oranje in the European Championship in Slovakia.

“I think another year in the starting line-up at NEC would be better for him. Then he’ll play everything and become even better. He needs to get some more playing time,” said Meijer about the interest of the top Dutch clubs in the 22-year-old Roefs.

“Will Ajax, for example, immediately use him as their first keeper? With the interests in the Champions League?”, he wondered out loud. In Amsterdam, completely different interests are at stake, Meijer knows. “The pressure at a top club is much greater than at NEC.”

“What does the coach do in the event of a setback? In the event of a mistake? At a top club, Roefs will undoubtedly train at a higher level. But matches are the real yardstick. The stage of truth. I think he is still seen as an ideal second keeper. And then? Honestly? (The move) I wouldn’t do it.”
