Liverpool progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win at Anfield, but the night was overshadowed by a serious injury to Noa Lang and racist abuse aimed at Ibrahima Konaté.
A first-half collision between Konaté and Victor Osimhen left the Galatasaray striker with a broken arm and forced him off at half-time. Liverpool said in a statement that Konaté was then targeted with racist abuse across social media and stressed such behaviour does not belong in football or wider society.
Lang became entangled in pitch-side advertising hoardings. The 26-year-old required oxygen on the pitch before being taken to a Merseyside hospital for emergency surgery on a deep laceration to his thumb.
Galatasaray are preparing legal action against UEFA and potentially the host venue over the incident. The club is seeking compensation for victimisation, including the player’s salary during his recovery.
The fallout left a convincing Liverpool victory clouded by a grim injury and a racism row as the competition moves into the last eight.
