Gary O’Neil referenced his former club Wolves as he was unveiled as Ipswich Town manager, the 43-year-old joining from Strasbourg on a three-year deal ahead of their Premier League return.
At his first press conference, he contrasted Ipswich with Wolves, saying he learned a lot there and that the clubs are run very differently, a key reason for taking the role. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he added that this underpinned his eagerness to lead Town.
O’Neil took over at Wolves in August 2023, steering them to 14th and the FA Cup quarter-finals. He later signed a new long-term contract but was dismissed less than a year later, in December 2024, with the team 19th.
Jeff Shi served as executive chairman during his tenure, and has since stepped down with Nathan Shi taking over.
His final Wolves match was a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich, a fourth successive league loss and their 11th in 16 league games.
He oversaw memorable wins against Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. The dramatic FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Coventry City denied Wolves a Wembley trip and proved a turning point.
