Man City’s Defensive Gamble Backfires as Arsenal Strike Late

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City thought they had outmanoeuvred Arsenal. For 92 minutes, the plan held. Erling Haaland’s early strike seemed enough, the defensive block was sturdy, and Arsenal’s flair was blunted. But football has a way of punishing caution, and Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd-minute finish left City with just a point — and Liverpool with a growing advantage at the summit.

Guardiola’s Tactical Shift

Guardiola is not often accused of conservatism. Yet at the Emirates he embraced a shape more reminiscent of José Mourinho than his own ideals. Having led from the ninth minute, he withdrew Haaland on 76 minutes, deployed Nico Gonzalez, and slid City into a 5-5-0. It was a decision born of exhaustion, not philosophy.

“We don’t try to be like this but when the opponent is better we defend deeper and counter-attack – but that’s not our intention,” Guardiola explained. “I would prefer not to do it, but you have to at this level. I take a point and in some games we have to adjust.”

By the end, City’s possession stood at just 32.8% — the lowest of Guardiola’s league career. Pragmatism, almost unthinkable for this side, had taken centre stage.

Arsenal’s Persistence Pays Off

Arsenal dominated the ball, their 68% possession reflecting their control. Yet until Martinelli’s dramatic equaliser, they rarely pierced City’s deep lines. Micah Richards called it “the poorest” City had been on the ball in years, while Theo Walcott noted the lapse that allowed Martinelli through: “There was no pressure on the ball and they haven’t dropped… Donnarumma was left in no-man’s land.”

For Arsenal, this was not just a late point but a psychological reminder of their resilience in a title race that will stretch long into spring.

Liverpool’s Advantage Grows

For City, the wider concern is momentum. Seven points from five games represents their slowest league start in nearly two decades. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain perfect, five points clear, and increasingly confident.

Guardiola admitted fatigue — Napoli in midweek, Manchester United the previous Sunday — had drained his players. But excuses matter little in the standings. “We were incredibly tired,” he conceded, before acknowledging Arsenal’s strength: “They fought in the last two Premier League title races and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League so it’s so difficult.”

One little slip was all it took. For City, the gamble almost worked. For Arsenal, it was proof persistence can be as valuable as brilliance. For Liverpool, it was another step towards authority.
