Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo will be cheering for Brentford when the Bees face Arsenal at the Gtech Community Stadium on Thursday night.
Semenyo scored his fifth goal in Manchester City colours in a 3-0 win over Fulham on Wednesday as the Blues maintained the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal ahead of their visit to west London.
Pep Guardiola’s side have given themselves renewed hope in the title race in the last week, coming from behind to run out 2-1 winners over Liverpool at Anfield before seeing off Fulham as they look to chase down Mikel Arteta’s high-flying Gunners.
The jury remains out on whether Manchester City have it in them to sustain their charge for silverware on multiple fronts in what remains of the season, having set up a Carabao Cup final meeting with Arsenal at Wembley for March 22.
Guardiola will be delighted to see Erling Haaland back amongst the goals in the last week, with the Norwegian scoring his 21st and 22nd goals of the Premier League season in the wins over Liverpool and Fulham.
However, Semenyo’s excellent start to life at the Etihad Stadium since his £64 million arrival from Bournemouth in January has alleviated a significant portion of the goalscoring burden that Haaland single-handedly carried for the first half of the season.
Speaking to TNT Sports after Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Fulham, Semenyo was asked about the secret behind his seamless integration into Guardiola’s ranks.
“No secrets. I think it’s just being part of a great team, a great environment, the coach has been great, and they’ve made it easy for me to settle. It’s all a fairytale right now,” the Ghanian said.
The 26-year-old has helped sustain Manchester City’s Premier League charge in the last month or so and after breaking the deadlock against Fulham on Wednesday, Semenyo gave his two cents on the title race with
“It’s new to me, to be honest! I’m enjoying it, but obviously it comes with a lot of pressure, a lot of demands and I think we’ve got the team to do it. There’s 12 games to go, we just need to keep going,” the winger added.
Semenyo went on to admit that he will be watching on when Arsenal play Brentford on Thursday night. “Just going to sit tight, watch the game (Brentford vs Arsenal) tomorrow, and hopefully it goes our way. So let’s see,” he said.
Guardiola will be hoping for a favour from Brentford but will equally be reminding his players they just need to focus on their own games for the time-being, with City still far from their best as they enter the business end of the campaign.
