The forward has confirmed that he is hanging up his boots after over 20 years of senior experience under his belt.

The former Scotland international departed Wrexham last summer, after playing an important role in their promotion to the Championship under Phil Parkinson.

He featured 40 times for the Red Dragons, starting only twice, contributing eight goals and one assist as they earned a top two finish.

The 38-year-old also spent four seasons at Hillsborough, where he played alongside Bannan, making 124 league appearances.

Bannan remains with Sheffield Wednesday amid their financial issues, and is proving a key figure at the club amid supporter unrest.

The midfielder is captain, with the squad reduced in numbers after a number of exits in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult start to the season

Sheffield Wednesday have made a difficult start to the new campaign, with Henrik Pedersen’s side struggling for points.

The Owls are currently 23rd in the Championship table, having earned just five points from their opening seven games.

Bannan will be hoping he can turn around the club’s form before the October international break, although financial issues behind the scenes persist.

It has been reported that wages have gone unpaid for September, which has led to some talks about players not taking part in training later this week.

Next up for the Yorkshire outfit is a trip to face Birmingham City on Tuesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Steven Fletcher will be well remembered at Sheffield Wednesday

It’s no surprise to see Fletcher receiving so many well wishes from people within the game, and in particular from someone like Bannan.

The pair worked well together at Sheffield Wednesday, and he’s a player that will be well remembered by supporters at Hillsborough.

He scored 36 times in the Championship across his four campaigns at the club, which is the calibre of forward the current team could do with.

Bannan is also now 35, so might not be too far behind Fletcher in deciding to retire from his playing career.
