Following the expiration of his West Brom contract, 30-year-old Swift returned to Portsmouth this summer on a free transfer in a two-year deal, nearly 20 years after he was last in the club's youth system.

Portsmouth have had a decent start to the new Championship season under manager Mousinho, sitting in 14th place in the league table after nine games with three wins, three draws, and three losses.

This gives them an identical record to that of Watford, Swansea City, Charlton Athletic, Hull City and Birmingham, though with a goal difference of negative one, this puts them behind the first three teams mentioned.

Since his return to the South Coast, Swift has played in every single possible game for the club so far this season, starting in all but one of those games, a 2-1 away defeat to Ipswich Town, with Swift grabbing two assists in that time.

Swift's contract at Portsmouth, in terms of wages, is very similar to what he was earning at West Brom, according to Capology.

The midfielder was on a reported £22,500-per-week at the Hawthorns, compared to the £20,000 he is now earning with Portsmouth, a minor difference in comparison.

However, this salary puts him comfortably as the club's highest earner, £5k more than both loanees Conor Chaplin and Min-hyeok Yang and double the next permanent player, Colby Bishop, on £10k-per-week.

In fact, Swift's wage almost certainly puts him as the club's highest earner in well over a decade, with Pompey last in the Premier League in 2009/10 before dropping like a lead balloon to League Two in 2013, and only returning to the Championship last season.

Swift's arrival at Fratton Park is a clear statement of intent by the club to certify themselves as an established Championship side, not just with the pedigree that Swift brings, but with the wages they are willing to fork out.

Now 30, Swift has spent more or less his entire career in the English second tier, aside from 18 games in League One and one in the Premier League.

The Englishman has made over 340 appearances in the Championship since he first stepped foot in the division in 2014 with Rotherham United, whilst on loan from Chelsea, where he spent the majority of his youth career.

Spells with Swindon Town in League One, followed by a return to the Championship with Brentford and Reading before his switch to the Baggies in 2022, and now with Portsmouth.

Swift has over 100 goal contributions in that time, with his most prolific season being his final with Reading in 2021/22, where he scored 11 times and grabbed 13 assists from midfield.

He provides excellent quality and experience of the Championship to a relatively young Portsmouth side, which was sorely lacking in it, and will no doubt continue to be a key player when fit for Mousinho moving forward this campaign.
