Former Leeds United favourite Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at Athletic Club, joining Edin Terzic’s new backroom team.
The club said in a statement that Hughes will be the set-piece specialist and will join the team next Monday, having performed that role with Scotland at the World Cup, and that he has previously worked with Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.
Hughes spent three years at Elland Road between 2007 and 2010, making 139 appearances in all competitions. He helped Simon Grayson’s side win League One promotion in 2009/10.
After retiring in 2015, he held coaching posts across the EFL, most recently at Leicester City. He left the Foxes to take a brief role on Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup.
Athletic were also home to Marcelo Bielsa, who reached prominence in Europe across two seasons there. His side won 3-2 at Manchester United in a Europa League last-32 first leg, then sealed a 2-1 victory in Bilbao to eliminate Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.
The Bilbao club finished 12th in La Liga in 2025/26, a tight campaign in which they were six places clear of relegated Mallorca but separated by only three points.
