Leeds United cult hero lands surprise role with Marcelo Bielsa's former club | OneFootball

Former Leeds United fan favourite Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at Athletic Club.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, he joins new head coach Edin Terzic’s staff and is due to start next Monday, having filled the same role with Scotland at the World Cup.

Hughes was at Elland Road from 2007 to 2010, making 139 appearances in all competitions. He helped Simon Grayson’s side win League One promotion in 2009/10.

The Manchester-born coach retired in 2015, then took roles across the EFL, most recently at Leicester City. He left the Foxes to link up briefly with Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup. His coaching CV also includes Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Athletic previously employed Marcelo Bielsa, who made a major European impression across two seasons. His side won 3-2 at Old Trafford in a Europa League last-32 first leg against Manchester United, then sealed a 2-1 home victory to knock them out.

The Bilbao club endured a difficult 2025/26, finishing 12th in a tight La Liga. They ended six places above relegated Mallorca, yet only three points separated the pair.
