Sunderland face a pivotal summer as decisions loom over Lutsharel Geertruida and a cluster of expiring contracts. The Netherlands international has provided a solid presence during his season-long loan from RB Leipzig.

Sky Sports Germany reports that a decision has been made and Geertruida will not stay at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland not activating the €23m option to buy and the player set to return to Leipzig.

The report adds that he might not continue there either, with a permanent solution being explored following initial enquiries and strong interest across Europe’s top five leagues.

As things stand, Geertruida is not the only potential departure, with eight players out of contract in summer 2026. Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, Geertruida, Dennis Cirkin, Harrison Jones, Niall Huggins, Zak Johnson and Dan Neil are in the final weeks of their current deals.

Some of that group are currently out on loan.
