Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner has warned his players about Atletico Madrid’s “incredible” attack and their threat on counter-attacks, insisting they have the ability to inflict damage in a blink.
United are enjoying a fantastic start to the 2025/26 season. They remain unbeaten in the WSL and currently sit in third place, two points below table leaders Chelsea and just one adrift of Manchester City in second position.
Skinner’s team also began their debut Champions League group stage campaign with a 1-0 win over Valerenga last week.
Skipper Maya Le Tissier scored from the spot to secure United their first three points.
United will undoubtedly be looking to register another three points on the board when they face Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid at Centro Deportivo Alcalá de Henares on Thursday.
Ahead of the fixture, Skinner and Julia Zigiotti Olme spoke to the press and shared their thoughts on the contest.
Asked what Atletico’s best qualities are, Skinner answered, “When I look at them, they have an incredible attack. They have flair, they have aggression, they are very evasive. They have got Vilde Boe Risa, who used to play for Manchester United and is a wonderful footballer. They defend very well as well, so they have quite a good balance.”
“I think we have to defend well tomorrow night because of the threats they have. Also, with the ball, I think they have to be aware of us. We’ve spoken about it, we have to be focused and defensively alert because Atleti can spring counter-attacks quickly and have the ability to beat you one v one.”
“Also, in front of their fans, I think it will be a good atmosphere. We see a lot threats, but also hopefully we can give them our threats too.”
Zigiotti added, “I agree with Marc. They’re good on counter-attacks, so we need to be careful with that. They have quick players and technical players. Hopefully we can control the game and control the ball, and get them where we want them.”
On how he’s feeling, Skinner explained, “We’re excited. We’re looking forward to playing Atleti, fantastic team, fantastic club. We’re really looking forward to it. We know how good we are, we believe in ourselves, we also know we’re facing a really tough challenge.”
“Tomorrow night will be a really good challenge for us – everyone is fit and raring to go.”
Zigiotti has already developed an exceptional relationship in midfield with Hinata Miyazawa.
Asked about this, the United summer signing said, “I really enjoy playing with Hini, she’s a brilliant player and very easy to play with. We don’t have to talk that much on the pitch, we just look at each other and know what the other one is thinking. It’s been a real pleasure playing with her.”
Atletico vs. United kicks off at 5.45 pm.
