The Red Devils’ win over Sunderland has eased the pressure on their under-fire head coach

Mason Mount has insisted Manchester United are “100% behind” Ruben Amorim after the Red Devils saw off Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea midfielder, whose time in Manchester has been largely plagued by injuries, stepped into the starting line-up on Saturday at the expense of summer signing Matheus Cunha and made a near-instant impact, scoring United’s opener with only eight minutes on the clock.

It was his first goal of the 2025-26 campaign, as well as his first Premier League goal for United at Old Trafford.

"It was an exciting game, we enjoyed it,” the 26-year-old said after the match. “The first-half performance, being up 2-0, really helped us; the second half we wanted to push on for more but the result was the most important thing.

“At home if we start well we can take control and score goals. In the second half it gets a bit loose, and that's something we'll work on.”

Mount continued, saying he hoped new signigns Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens could build on their performances against Sunderland: “Very excited for the next game now and also [Benjamin] Sesko getting his goal; his performance today was very good so buzzing for him, and for Senne too.”

It was reported ahead of Saturday’s match that United boss Amorim could be sacked if his team lost to Sunderland, with a victory - his team’s third in a row at home, in fact - meaning some of the pressure on the Portuguese has surely eased despite an overall lacklustre start to the campaign.

Mount, meanwhile, was steadfast in his support of the manager.

“We're 100% behind the gaffer,” he said. “We've had some results that hurt us - the team, the staff and the fans - but that was important today.”

He continued: "[Today] needs to be [the start of building something]; we thought after [beating] Chelsea it would be the start of something and then we go to Brentford and have a disappointing result.

“It starts today and we'll be working hard over the break. We want to get back-to-back wins, then three in a row and push on for the top four.”
