Crystal Palace and Bournemouth shared the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 encounter at Selhurst Park, with Jean-Philippe Mateta producing a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point for the Eagles.
The game was a rollercoaster from the off. Bournemouth’s teenage sensation Eli Kroupi made a dream Premier League debut, opening the scoring inside seven minutes.
The 19-year-old capitalised on an inswinging corner from Justin Kluivert, heading home from close range, and then doubled his tally before half-time thanks to a low cross from Antoine Semenyo that Marc Guehi misjudged, allowing Kroupi to volley into the net.
Palace responded after the break with intensity. VAR intervened early in the second half to overturn an offside flag, allowing Mateta to convert a Daniel Munoz cross and halve the deficit. Minutes later, he was at the far post again to finish another Munoz delivery, bringing the scores level at 2-2.
Bournemouth looked set to snatch a late win when Ryan Christie slotted home in the 89th minute following a low cross from Marcus Tavernier. Yet Mateta kept his cool when Palace were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Bafode Diakite brought down Marc Guehi at a corner. His composed spot-kick ensured a 3-3 finish, preserving Palace’s unbeaten home record and their run of strong form.
Despite his heroics, the French striker will be rueing a golden opportunity to snatch all three points in the dying moments, as he fired over from just eight yards.
The result keeps Palace in eighth place, while Bournemouth sit fourth, just missing the chance to go top of the Premier League temporarily.
