Maycon: Corinthians’ win praised, politics hurt the season

Corinthians faced Atlético-MG early Saturday evening, October 18, at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship, and won 1-0, with a goal scored by Maycon. After the match, the midfielder celebrated the goal but emphasized the team's collective performance.

“First of all, I'm happy with the goal, happy with the team's performance. I think, above all, when the team plays well, individual talents stand out. Today I was happy with the goal, thank God. But I think I was much happier with the team's performance. I think we pushed ourselves a lot this week, after the Santos game.”, said the midfielder in the mixed zone.

“There are games where we lower our level a lot, and at Corinthians, this type of performance is not acceptable. So I'm much happier with the team's performance than with my goal itself. Of course, I'm happy, but I think the team is more important than anything.”, he continued.

Maycon also spoke about the more assertive stance the team demonstrated from the start of the match against Atlético-MG. The player valued the support of the fans and acknowledged that the team needs to make better use of the chances created.

“Our team has been showing this in recent games at the Arena, it's a strength we have, and I think with the fans we have, we must take full advantage. Unfortunately, we had some opportunities and couldn't convert them, but I think these are details we can correct, but I think the stance we had shows a lot of what we wanted in the game.”, the player pointed out.

The Timão's number 7 also spoke about the slightly more advanced role he played in Saturday's victory, which resulted precisely in his goal. Maycon recalled that he has publicly stated the way he prefers to play but made himself available to the coaching staff to play in any position.

“I think I've already given an interview talking about this, I like to play inside, if I have the conditions to play, and if not, I think I can perform other roles and be important too. Not just for the goal, I think I can provide some alternatives for the group itself.”, said the midfielder.

“So I think that's what's important for the coaching staff, I think the players perform more than one role, I think Raniele started as a defender, then went to midfielder, Breno started a bit more centralized, then went a bit to the side, I think this is important for our rotation, it affects the opponent and I think it adds a lot for Dorival to know how to use these alternatives from the moment we enter, so that we can play a game like we did today, difficult, but coming out with the victory.”, he continued.

The midfielder was also asked about the interference of the political turmoil Corinthians experienced this season on the field. Maycon revealed that the problems do indeed affect the squad, but the players try their best to shield themselves to do their part on the pitch.

“We have to stay focused on what we can control, there are situations we can't control, unfortunately. Unfortunately because of that, because I think the player is here to play football and do their best on the field. We have a very big responsibility to represent a team like Corinthians. We know the pressure there is and the team is prepared for it, the team is mature.”, he began.

“I think we had a very turbulent year, today it's a bit calmer, but there are still negative news about Corinthians. But this bothers us a lot because the team is always at the center of everything and we know that these negative things can harm the team. We have to do the best we can about it, keep everyone as calm as possible.”, continued the number 7.

“Romero and I have been here longer and we try to convey calmness, because I think when a player comes from outside to this whole situation, they don't know how to handle some situations. But I think, thank God, our team is well-focused, along with the coaching staff, with Fabinho as well.”, he proceeded.

“The team is very focused, the president doesn't have a normal day-to-day with us, even because of the political part he has to do. But I think Fabinho, the players, and the coaching staff are united to make Corinthians reach where it deserves and have a calmer season at the end of the year.”, concluded Maycon.

After facing Atlético-MG in Itaquera in the Brazilian Championship, Corinthians remains focused on the national competition. Next Saturday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will visit Vitória at the Barradão Stadium for the 30th round of the national competition.
