It ended Newcastle 3 Benfica 0.
Anthony Gordon opening the scoring when finishing off a sweeping team move.
A goal to the good at the break, Newcastle were dominant the second forty-five.
The second goal finally arrived when a superb Nick Pope throw into the opposition half released Harvey Barnes and his run and finish ended up with a shot in off the post.
Man of the match Anthony Gordon then with a devastating run that opened Benfica up and then unselfishly played in Barnes for his second.
Looking at the individuals in black and white, interesting to get an independent perspective on how this played out.
‘Whoscored ratings use data from every single Premier League match, over 200 raw statistics included in the automated calculation of a player’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.
Every event of importance is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome.’
(The Whoscored display can only show four subs at any one time, Joelinton rated 7.0)
As you can see, eleven players received a rating of 7.0 or more, ten of them playing for United (including two NUFC subs).
It sums it up that the only Benfica player to get a rating of 7.0 or higher was their keeper Trubin (7.8), who made a number of quality saves to prevent the scoreline potentially doubling.
Gordon (8.5) the best player on the pitch and rightly getting the top MOTM rating.
Nobody had a bad game but supersub Harvey Barnes (8.4) was rated second highest after two cool finishes, with Dan Burn (8.2) third highest.
An automated ratings system is never going to be perfect and not quite sure how the excellent and hard working Nick Woltemade was rated only 6.9.
