Stade de Reims have announced that they have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the transfer of Abdoul Koné (20) with a contract until 2031. The young French defender will finish the Ligue 2 season with the French club before moving to Germany next June.
“I am very happy to be able to take the next step in my career by joining RB Leipzig and to be able to play there starting this summer. The club’s style of play and direction are perfectly in line with my development goals,” said Koné upon joining the current fourth-place team in the Bundesliga.
After arriving at Reims from Paris FC in the summer of 2023, the 1.92m giant and French U20 international has made 26 appearances for the Champagne-based club. An undisputed starter in Reims’ defence, Koné has played 18 Ligue 2 matches this season, recording 15 starts, one goal and one assist.
By signing with Leipzig, Koné has become the eleventh French player to join the Saxon club. He is now set to follow in the footsteps of Dayot Upamecano, Castello Lukeba and Ibrahima Konaté, who all preceded him. The fee has not been disclosed but the fee is reported to be around €20m.
