Kylian Mbappé became France’s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday night, his brace in a 3-1 win over Senegal in their World Cup opener taking him past Olivier Giroud, who offered his congratulations.
According to L'Équipe, the 39-year-old, now at LOSC, used his club’s social channels to wish his junior 50 more goals and to urge him to chase Hugo Lloris’s caps landmark.
For that second record, patience will be needed. Mbappé, 27, has 99 caps and is expected to reach 100 during this World Cup, with Lloris out in front on 145.
Already France’s leading assist provider, Mbappé may also have that other milestone in mind.
Now second on the all-time list, Giroud has updated his Instagram bio, which states he is France’s second-highest scorer on 57 goals. That position should hold for a while, with Paul Pogba the closest active player on 11. The midfielder has not featured for France since March 2022.
