Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings vs Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Aston Villa will sting, not so much because of the quality of the opposition but because this was a contest that Thomas Frank’s side allowed to drift. Spurs went in front early and looked in control, only to lose their grip through a mix of hesitancy and blunt finishing.

Morgan Rogers equalised with a lovely strike from outside the box before half-time and Emi Buendia finished a wonderful move for the winner with just over ten minutes remaining. That clinical edge was everything Spurs lacked.

Defensive Effort Outshone by Villa Ruthlessness

Guglielmo Vicario 6The Italian may have questions to answer for the Villa goal, even if it was a brilliant finish from Rogers, positioning seemed off. Otherwise had very little to do, no real chance with Buendia’s strike.

Pedro Porro 6Largely handled John McGinn well and showed confidence in possession. A superb switch of play set up a first-half opening for Odobert, but his influence faded after the interval.

Kevin Danso 7Drafted in minutes before kick-off after Cristian Romero’s injury in the warm-up, he dominated in duels with Donyell Malen and caused issues with his long throws. Romero was barely missed, which is the biggest compliment possible.

Micky van de Ven 7Pressed Rogers aggressively and dealt with danger well, though a late lunge earned him a booking. His recovery pace saved Spurs again late on when he stopped Ollie Watkins.

Djed Spence 6Rock solid in one-on-one situations but limited going forward. Spurs were far less threatening without Destiny Udogie overlapping on the flank.

Midfield Battle Led by Palhinha

Joao Palhinha 8A relentless force. Couple of great challenges in midfield when ball broke loose, crunching Amadou Onana. Headed knock-down set up Bentancur for opener. Relentless energy.

Rodrigo Bentancur 6Took his goal well and kept things tidy, yet questions remain over the overall balance in midfield. Functional rather than dynamic.

Mohammed Kudus 8Brilliant ball in for early goal, before producing a sublime touch and finish shortly after only for the offside flag to go up. Holds the ball up better than any Spurs player and is the only consistent attacker Thomas Frank has right now.

Attack Falters at Crucial Moments

Xavi Simons 5Too hesitant and safe on the ball, reluctant to shoot when space opened up. Big defensive shift, with four tackles in the first half alone, but Spurs need much more in the final third.

Wilson Odobert 7Bright in flashes before half-time without end product. Improved afterwards with direct running and forced chances, although he hammered one golden opportunity straight at Konsa.

Mathys Tel 5Plenty of effort, little execution. Struggled to retain possession against Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres, then missed his best chance completely.

Substitutes

Richarlison 4, Lucas Bergvall 5, Randal Kolo Muani 5None made a telling impact. With Randal Kolo Muani now fit, Richarlison’s minutes are under threat.

Spurs will point to possession and territory, but Aston Villa were decisive and that is exactly what separates mid-table frustration from top-four ambition.
