Pros and cons of Celtic’s rumoured interest in Cammy Devlin

Hearts are having a terrific season, that’s not in doubt. The Jambos are top of the league and deservedly so, naturally this has attracted interest in several of their players, with Celtic being credited with an interest in one in particular.
Cammy Devlin is the man who’s ‘reportedly’ attracting interest from the champions, but like ninety nine percent of the SMSM rumours, I would take it with a large pinch of salt. Devlin’s contract at Hearts expires on 26 May 2026 and he is free to speak to clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement on 1st January.

The combative Aussie international midfielder has been enjoying a splendid campaign, and is arguably the Gorgie side’s most important player, but for me he’s not a player who would greatly enhance our side.
Some would argue that Devlin would add some much needed steel and tenacity to our midfield, but the question is, would he walk straight into our first team at the expense of either Callum McGregor, Arne Engels, Reo Hatate, Luke McCowan or Paulo Bernardo? No would be my answer, and you would be delusional if you thought otherwise.
Devlin would be a decent squad player at most, and we don’t need any more of them, we need players who are capable of going straight into the starting XI and making an immediate impact.
Hearts supporters have scoffed at the mere mention of their star player heading to the East End of Glasgow, but the brutal reality for the Jambos is that if Celtic were in any way serious about recruiting the player, then he’d be here in an instant.

If the Jambos faithful could get their heads out of the clouds for a few moments then they would realise that their club would cash in on a player out of contract in the summer for a nominal fee. What’s more is that the player himself would jump at the chance to play for a bigger club whilst at the same time probably doubling or even quadrupling his salary.
Not that it will happen, as Celtic surely have other targets in mind. So Jambos can stop worrying, Devlin is not going to be a Celtic target. Honestly. However if Wilfried Nancy has had a favourable opinion of the combative midfielder and thinks he could suit his system, that might chance, Stranger things have happened and relieving Hearts of their best player isn’t the daftest idea….
Merry Christmas to the Diets.
