Hosts claim all three points in first El Clasico of the season
Real Madrid claimed victory in the first El Clasico of the season, beating fierce rivals Barcelona 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season across all competitions, before Jude Bellingham netted what turned out to be the winner shortly before half-time.
The hosts had the chance to extend their lead early in the second half, but Wojciech Szczesny pulled off a stunning save to deny Mbappe from the penalty spot.
A depleted Barcelona side, without the likes of Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski, did equalise through Fermin Lopez but couldn’t get back on level terms for a second time as they fall five points behind the LaLiga leaders.
Los Blancos were fired up after losing all four El Clasico meetings last season and appeared to have an early opportunity to break the deadlock via the penalty spot.
However, referee Cesar Soto Grado, changed his decision after reviewing the incident involving Vinicius Jr. and Lamine Yamal via the pitch-side monitor.
A few minutes later Barcelona had VAR to thank once again to rule out Mbappe’s strike for offside.
Jules Kounde missed Barcelona's best chance to pull level and to compound their misery they had Pedri sent off deep into injury time for a second bookable offence.
