Real Sociedad are back in a Copa del Rey final four years on from 2021, sealing their place on Wednesday. A Mikel Oyarzabal penalty at Anoeta finished off Athletic Club after Beñat Turrientes’s 0-1 first-leg winner at San Mamés.
According to AS, the campaign began in Galicia in October with Sergio Francisco overseeing the early rounds.
Their debut brought a 0-3 win at SD Negreira in the Campo Municipal Jesús García Calvo, with Mikel Goti, Arsen Zakharyan and Beñat Turrientes on target. That was followed by a 0-2 victory over Reus FC.
December’s test at Eldense in the Nuevo Pepico Amat ended 1-2, through Luka Sucic and a 95th-minute strike from Pablo Marín. The tie closed one coaching phase, Jon Ansotegi led in Elda before the club appointed Pellegrino Matarazzo to add solidity.
Under Matarazzo, La Real ousted Osasuna in the round of 16 after a 2-3 at Anoeta, the tie resolved on penalties as Unai Marrero saved two. They then beat Alavés 2-3 at Mendizorroza, with Oyarzabal, Guedes and Óskarsson scoring.
The final is on 18 April at La Cartuja in Sevilla, fondly remembered after the 3 April 2021 triumph. Fans can travel this time, and Matarazzo’s side face Diego Simeone’s Atlético de Madrid, who eliminated Barcelona.
Gipuzkoan fans are already planning a large trip to Andalucía, hopeful of another title.
