Ruben Amorim played down suggestions that Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland marked a turning point in their inconsistent campaign, insisting his side had “no momentum” despite delivering arguably their most complete first-half display of the season.
First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško lifted United into the top half of the Premier League table and eased the growing pressure on Amorim heading into the international break. The win was achieved with an uncharacteristic composure, with United managing the second half with control, limiting Sunderland to few meaningful chances.
Yet Amorim refused to be drawn into optimism. When asked about whether he is disappointed that the upcoming international break may disrupt any chance of building momentum, Amorim replied, “There is no momentum with our team.” “We know what happens when we win one game. The frustration is not seeing the same team at home and away,” he told Sky Sports.
He acknowledged his side’s discipline and defensive focus but remained critical of their drop in quality after the break. “Sometimes you have your moments. In the first half, we had a lot of them. But in the second, if we cannot play well, they will not play well. That is the way a big team plays.”
Amorim’s comments underscore his insistence on consistency over fleeting form, an attitude United fans will hope translates into sustained improvement after the break, when United will face Liverpool at Anfield.
