Monaco want to keep Simon Adingra but are unlikely to trigger Sunderland’s purchase option, according to L’Equipe.

The Ivory Coast international joined on loan in January after limited minutes on Wearside, then featured regularly, making 16 appearances and 11 starts, mostly at left wing-back. His loan runs until 30 June.

Adingra’s deal includes a €17m clause, around £14.8m, and Monaco paid a €1m fee, about £870,000, to take him mid-season. The report says a drop in Ligue 1 TV income and uncertainty over Europe have left finances tight, making activation of the clause very unlikely.

Monaco are exploring alternatives, which could involve trying to renegotiate the fee with Sunderland or pursuing another loan. His situation is complicated by a Sunderland contract running to 2030. The report also notes a €7.5m option, around £6.5m, in Wout Faes’ Leicester City loan, with Monaco keen to keep him without necessarily triggering that clause.

For Sunderland, Adingra’s future will be one to monitor this summer. He arrived with a strong reputation but did not fully establish himself before departing on loan, while his Monaco minutes have at least maintained his value and profile. Any reluctance to pay the option may prompt fresh talks if they want him to stay.
