World Cup qualifying is over, the 48-nation line-up for North America is set, and Sunderland players are in contention this summer. According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats are set to be well represented.
Tuesday’s play-offs filled the slots, and Italy lost on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina after earlier beating Northern Ireland in Zenica, ending Trai Hume and Dan Ballard’s run.
Lutsharel Geertruida made three qualifying appearances and played 73 minutes in the 1-1 with Ecuador. It would be a surprise if Ronald Koeman left the 20-cap defender out. Chemsdine Talbi has 13 qualifying minutes but four recent caps, while Brian Brobbey led the line in that draw and has one goal in 10 caps.
Nilson Angulo missed that Netherlands game through injury but has 12 caps and featured in Ecuador’s final four qualifiers. If fit, the winger will be there. Omar Alderete is a cornerstone of this Los Guaraníes side and will be a starter if fit.
Wilson Isidor has switched to Haiti and won two caps this month, already scoring a late equaliser in Tuesday’s 1-1 with Iceland. Habib Diarra has four goals in 18 caps and, with improved Sunderland form, will surely make Senegal’s squad.
Noah Sadiki played 73 minutes in their intercontinental play-off and is now a key figure. Granit Xhaka featured in all but 14 minutes, scored twice and captained his side. This could be his last World Cup, and he will be determined to make his mark after a stunning season on Wearside.
