Real Madrid suffered their first defeat under Xabi Alonso on Saturday and it was quite an embarrassing one, as Los Blancos were completely annihilated 5-2 at the Metropolitano.
The Spanish giants, who were coming on the back of a seven-game winning run in all competitions, were completely outclassed in both attack and defence.
While the match was poised 2-2 at half-time, Real Madrid simply couldn’t control the game in the second half, conceding no less than three goals.
It was clear that the Real Madrid defence simply couldn’t handle Atletico Madrid’s attacking onslaught, with even star performer Dean Huijsen struggling in aerial battles.
However, the attack was equally impotent, especially in the second half and this is backed up by statistics.

In the second half, Real Madrid failed to register a single shot on target during the derby and in the entire match, they managed only two.
This compares to seven shots on target that Atletico Madrid managed throughout the game, five of which resulted in a goal.
In terms of attempts on goal, Atleti ended the game with more than double the number of goals at 13, compared to Real Madrid’s six.
Among those 13 attempts, eight of them were taken from inside the box, which highlights that Real Madrid offered the attackers way too much space and freedom to make inroads into the box.
This lack of attacking endeavour, coupled with an equally porous defence, is certainly a cause for concern for coach Xabi Alonso, who has his task cut out as he looks to guide Real Madrid back to winning ways.
