In a major development, SPORT reports that Victor Font, FC Barcelona presidential candidate, is working to secure a preferential purchase option for Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland.

With the presidential elections less than a week away, Font, who is going up against Joan Laporta, is leaving no stone unturned in his effort to come out on top. And, Haaland appears to have emerged as the final ace up his sleeve before the voting takes place on Sunday.

Meeting held

As per the report, members of Font’s sporting management team were seen leaving the hotel where Manchester City were staying in the Spanish capital, the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, on Wednesday.

Carles Planchart and Xavier Aguilar, both part of Font’s team, held meetings inside the hotel with the Premier League club’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, and their sporting director, Hugo Viana.

According to consulted sources, one of the objectives of the meeting was to secure a preferential purchase option for Barcelona if the day ever arrives when Haaland and Manchester City decide to part ways.

The Norwegian striker has long been one of the major sporting targets linked to the Catalan club, and his name continues to appear in the club’s long-term planning.

Haaland recently renewed his contract with Manchester City until 2034, meaning that a transfer in the short term is not being considered.

However, having a preferential option would give Barcelona priority ahead of other clubs that have shown interest, such as Real Madrid.

It is also worth noting that Carles Planchart, who worked alongside Pep Guardiola for almost two decades at Barcelona, Manchester City and Bayern Munich, maintains an excellent relationship both with the coach and with the Premier League club.

The conversations took place with total discretion inside the hotel, specifically in a private lounge, in an effort to keep the meeting away from cameras and outside attention.

It remains to be seen whether this move helps Font in any way come Sunday’s election.
