Internacional overpowered Grêmio 4-2 at Beira-Rio in the Gauchão first phase, with home fans chanting ole by the end. According to Globo.com, the bruising Gre-Nal exposed five key faults in Luís Castro’s side, starting in goal.
Grêmio struck first through Amuzu, after a fine Tetê cross that Carlos Vinicius helped on. Five minutes later, at nine minutes, Weverton misread a high, outswinging corner, Borré’s free header caused chaos, Noriega’s goal-line touch ricocheted in off Marcos Rocha for an own goal.
Inter then took charge after the break, scoring three in nine minutes as Grêmio lost control against their pace. The visitors failed to use their advantage to manage the tempo, while Paulo Pezzolano’s team were in inspired form.
Cristaldo squandered a big chance and lacked movement, so he was withdrawn at half-time. In the fourth and final year of his deal, his Porto Alegre spell is sliding towards a sad end for weary supporters.
Wide, Tetê delivered for the opener but offered little else beyond ineffective dribbles, and Amuzu saw little of the ball as attacks flowed right. Enamorado made no impression, opponents doubled up, with Ronaldo regularly aiding Bernabei, and Grêmio need an answer.
Out of possession, Grêmio were passive, often marking space rather than men, with Tiaguinho exposed and Arthur forced to cover two. Marcos Rocha’s corridor became a route for Carbonero, raising doubts over the captain’s place, with João Pedro a live alternative.
Castro’s changes did not shift the momentum. Edenilson and Dodi at the interval repeated a tired formula, Enamorado again failed to convince, and the André Henrique and Carlos Vinicius pairing went unfed. Grêmio now visit Fluminense on Wednesday for a test of equal or greater difficulty.
