Blackpool FC are on the hunt for a new manager
Blackpool FC are on the hunt for a new manager.
The Seasiders finished ninth in League One last season and were hopeful of building upon that in the 2025/26 campaign, after enjoying a busy summer of transfer action.
Players such as Josh Bowler, George Honeyman, Niall Ennis and Malcolm Ebiowei all moved to Bloomfield Road during the most recent transfer window, which sparked real belief that a realistic play-off push was on the cards.
However, Blackpool have struggled immensely so far this season. After playing 12 matches, the Seasiders are 23rd in the division, recording just two victories thus far.
The Tangerines are without a win in their last four matches, and with the threat of relegation seriously looming, they were recently forced into making a big decision.
Steve Bruce had been in charge of Blackpool since September 2024, and played a huge part in seeing the club enjoy some strong form towards the end of last season.
That wasn’t enough for the former Manchester United defender to keep his job though and he was subsequently dismissed in October.
It was recently reported by Alan Nixon via Patreon that Matt Bloomfield could take over as Blackpool manager, following his recent dismissal by Luton Town and was set for a second interview with the Seasiders.
Amid this news, Football League World have taken a look at Blackpool FC’s annual wage bill.
When compared to the rest of League One, Blackpool have one of the division’s largest annual wage bills.
Only five teams in the third-tier are thought to be spending more on paying players, with those clubs being Luton Town, Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle.
This means that Blackpool have the second-highest annual wage bill when disregarding the outfits that spent last term in the Championship.
When taking Blackpool’s estimated annual wage bill into account, it makes great sense as to why they decided to dismiss Bruce.
The Seasiders are outlaying quite a lot of money on paying players when compared to the rest of the division.
This is not reflected in the league standings, with Peterborough United currently the only team below them in the League One table. Posh also have a game in hand, which could see them jump the Tangerines.
Whether Bloomfield or one of Blackpool’s other candidates are appointed as manager, they must start performing immediately, or the Seasiders could find themselves in an extremely worrying position as the season progresses.
