Alexander Isak completed a dramatic £125m deadline day transfer from Newcastle.

It represents a British record deal - and expectations will be sky high on a forward who scored 23 Premier League goals last season.

But rather than meet up with his new teammates, the Sweden striker jetted straight out for international duty.

It was a tough couple of fixtures for Isak and his head coach Jon-Dahl Tomasson - drawing against Slovenia and losing to Kosovo - leaving Isak’s 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Isak's back on Merseyside

But following the conclusion of those fixtures, the 25-year-old FINALLY jetted back to his new home on Merseyside - linking up with his new colleagues and setting about his work under Arne Slot.

Liverpool are back in action this weekend with the Premier League champions facing Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Given Isak has had NO preseason training - having sat out Newcastle’s preseason fixtures - it’s going to take a long time for him to build up match fitness.

He featured for only 20 minutes in Sweden’s second game of the international window - with Tomasson taking care to ensure Isak’s long-term fitness is protected.

Liverpool very happy with Isak so far

However the new Liverpool No9 will now need to get up to speed.

Slot was determined to play down early expectations on Isak in his pre-game press conference - pointing out his lack of fitness - but he and his staff have had a close look at Isak in training this week.

And now it’s been revealed what the Liverpool coaches have made of Isak in their opening exchanges. TBR Football carries a report from Graeme Bailey - which suggests that the Reds are already DELIGHTED with the signing they’ve made.

Isak looking SHARP

“I am told the staff were not expecting too much from Isak, although he had been training, he virtually missed all of pre-season, but he looked incredibly sharp,” the report reads.

“Liverpool won’t be rushing him, but he isn’t injured or anything, so they don’t think he is too far off – but they are delighted with what they have already seen. They really think he is a good fit for them.”

We can expect Isak to feature from the bench against the Clarets before working his way into consistent first-team appearances over the next few weeks.

Hugo Ekitike is likely to be the team’s leading striker in the time being - but it would be no surprise to see the £69m man feature alongside Isak at some stage throughout the campaign.
