Wolves are considering Gil Vicente head coach César Peixoto with doubts emerging over the future of Rob Edwards.

Wolves have had a strong start to the transfer window as they look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt next season.

In a surprising development, Andre signed a new contract to extend his stay at Molineux, whilst Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez have joined the club on two-year deals.

There is still a lot of work to do, but it has been a positive period for the club, who endured an embarrassing campaign last time out, when they were effectively relegated with months of the season to go.

Wolves consider Gil Vicente boss César Peixoto

Even though Wolves’ relegation wasn’t on Rob Edwards, he struggled to turn their fortunes around after his appointment in November, aside from a decent run early in 2026.

The manner of the results and performances saw sections of the fans turn on Edwards during the run-in, and there were calls for him to go at the end of the season.

That talk has cooled recently, but Portuguese media outlet A Bola has claimed that his future is still in doubt, with the report stating Wolves are considering Gil Vicente boss César Peixoto.

The 46-year-old has had a mixed managerial career, having managed six clubs in his home country since starting out with Varzim in 2019.

However, Peixoto enjoyed a very impressive season with Gil Vicente in 2025/26, as they finished 6th in the top flight, and they had a decent shot at reaching Europe.

The update explains that whilst there’s no guarantee Edwards will leave Wolves, Peixoto is on their radar as they consider a change in the dugout, with Jorge Mendes likely to play a role in the appointment if the Championship side is on the lookout for a new head coach.

Rob Edwards will be under pressure to get off to a fast start with Wolves next season

If this news came out shortly after the final game of the season, it would not have been a surprise, as Edwards was facing fierce criticism from the fans.

Had Wolves decided to sack Edwards, he could have had few complaints. Whilst he inherited a squad nowhere near Premier League level, there was no clear style of play, and hardly any positive results, under Edwards.

Yet, the timing now would be strange. Andre spoke of Edwards’ role in convincing him to sign a new contract, and Trippier explained that the boss was a driving force behind his decision to sign for the club.

Of course, any manager at this level would be glad to have those two players, along with Jimenez, but it seems evident Edwards has had a big say in recruitment, so to change him now would be an odd call.

Therefore, it would be a shock if Peixoto, or anyone else, would be appointed ahead of the new season, but this is a reminder that Edwards needs a fast start next season.

As mentioned, a chunk of the fan base aren’t happy with Edwards, and the calibre of player brought in so far this summer, combined with the general resources at the club, means that automatic promotion is the aim.
