According to Glorioso 1904, Álvaro Carreras has been named in Spain’s preliminary squad for the 2026 World Cup, as Luis de la Fuente’s staff assemble a group for the June tournament.
The pre-selection also follows fitness problems for other options at left-back, notably Marc Cucurella’s injury, which has led the federation to consider alternatives in defence. That context has opened the door for the Real Madrid full-back within a provisional pool of 40 to 50 players.
Carreras, who impressed in his most recent outing, had already been monitored in earlier long lists and is viewed as a contender to strengthen the left flank. Inclusion on the shortlist does not secure a final place, but it keeps him among the leading candidates.
Spain have been drawn in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Their fixtures run from 15 to 26 June 2026, starting their campaign against Cape Verde.
Valued at €60 million, Carreras spent the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 seasons with Benfica. He made 68 official appearances, scored five goals and provided five assists, helping the Eagles win the Taça da Liga last season.
