Cristhian Mosquera could still decide to switch international allegiances and play for Colombia, despite currently captaining the Spain u21s.

After a solid start to his Arsenal career, Cristhian Mosquera has been away with the Spain u21s over the international break.

Manager David Gordo named the centre-back as his captain against Cyprus last Friday, the first time the defender had worn the armband for the team.

Yet when asked by Spanish outlet AS over the break, Mosquera didn’t rule out potentially switching to Colombia in the future.

“I focus on my club and don’t worry or despair about other things coming up. Day to day is what depends on me, and the rest will come,” Mosquera said. “What depends on me is staying focused on my club and the doors will open.”

Mosquera did at least seem pleased to have taken on the captaincy with the Spain u21s, saying the experience was “very, very good”.

“At the last training camp, they told me I’d be the captain, and it was truly an honor,” Mosquera added. “I’m the most experienced player in the u21s, and I know that comes with responsibilities.

“I want to pass on my experience to the newcomers. I’ve known Gordo for a long time and I know where he wants things to go. I also have to lead the team from behind.”

Mosquera has played for Spain throughout his youth career, from the u15s to the Olympic Team. But while he does continue to prioritise playing for Spain, he qualifies for Colombia through his parents.

The 21-year-old was previously called up by the Colombia u20s, but he didn’t make an appearance for the side in the end.

With the World Cup coming up next summer, this could be Colombia’s chance to make a move and lure the player away, with the promise of featuring at the tournament.
