Barcelona may have just received a major lift in their defensive transfer plans, with fresh developments emerging around Alessandro Bastoni and his future at Inter Milan.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t SPORT), what once looked like a highly unlikely transfer is now slowly turning into a realistic opportunity. 

As per the outlet, Bastoni’s current situation at Inter has taken an unexpected turn in recent weeks. 

Once considered a key pillar in defence, the Italian international is now facing an uncertain role within the squad.

What’s the story?

Reports suggest his performances have dipped, with a particularly telling moment coming this past weekend when he was taken off at half-time against Como. 

That decision has only intensified speculation that he could lose his place in the starting XI for the remainder of the campaign.

There are also underlying fitness concerns, as Bastoni is reportedly dealing with bone oedema in his tibia, which has further complicated his situation. 

As a result, Inter are expected to manage his condition carefully, potentially keeping him out of upcoming matches, including their fixture against Cagliari.

Barcelona emerging as preferred destination

Amid this uncertainty, Barcelona have positioned themselves as a serious option for both the player and the club. 

According to the report, there is a growing belief on all sides that a move to Camp Nou could be the best solution moving forward.

As such, Inter are already preparing for a possible departure in the summer, with internal discussions suggesting they are open to selling rather than extending his contract. 

Interestingly, Bastoni himself is clear about his preference that he would only consider leaving if Barcelona is his next destination.

However, at this stage, Inter have advised patience. 

They have asked the player’s camp to delay formal negotiations for about a month, with the expectation that their domestic objectives will be resolved by then. 

Once that is achieved, attention will shift fully towards transfer decisions.

Financial gap remains key obstacle

Lastly, while the willingness to negotiate is growing, the deal ultimately hinges on finances. 

Inter’s current valuation stands at around €65–70 million, though there is an openness to adjust that figure depending on the structure of the offer.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are prepared to offer around €45-50 million, potentially including add-ons or even a player to bridge the gap.

That difference in valuation still needs to be resolved, but the fact that both sides are open to compromise suggests there is genuine room for progress.
