Real Madrid are set to enter the market for reinforcements at centre-back in the summer transfer window of 2026.

Despite having brought in Dean Huijsen earlier this year, Los Blancos realise the need to refresh their options further, given David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger’s fitness woes, and the fact that the veteran duo are out of contract at the end of the season.

Several options have been already identified as potential replacements, one of whom happens to be Bayern Munich defensive mainstay Dayot Upamecano.

Indeed, the French international, whose contract with the German champions expires on 30 June, 2026, has emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid to sign on a free transfer.

Bayern Munich, though, hope to renew the contract of Upamecano and keep him at the club for a long time, director Christoph Freund has revealed.

“Upa is an outstanding player with a great personality. He knows what he has at FC Bayern,” Freund told Sky Germany, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“Of course we hope he will stay with us in the long-term. There’s no deadline,” he added.

Real Madrid roped in David Alaba on a free transfer after his contract at Bayern Munich expired back in 2021 and are seemingly hoping for a similar move for Upamecano.

The Merengues tried to repeat that with Alphonso Davies as well, but were unsuccessful as the Canadian left-back ended up renewing his contract with the Bavarian giants.

So, it remains to be seen how things evolve with Upamecano, with Freund making it clear that they wish to renew his contract and insisting that there is no set deadline for the renewal agreement to be finalised.

Apart from Upamecano, Real Madrid also have their sights on his compatriot Ibrahima Konate, whose contract at Liverpool also expires at the end of the season.
