Club legend missed out on opportunity during time of uncertainty
John Terry says he was “frustrated” not to be in the dugout when Calum McFarlane and his Under-21s’ coaching staff took caretaker charge of Chelsea following Enzo Maresca’s departure.
Former captain Terry was a five-time Premier League winner with the Blues and has made no secret of a desire to one day coach the senior team.
Terry, who between 1998 and 2015 became Chelsea’s most appeared player in European competitions, was not asked to be involved when McFarlane and his coaching staff stepped up to guide Chelsea through their 1-1 draw with Manchester City and 2-1 defeat at Fulham last month following Maresca’s exit.
That is despite Terry having a part-time club role as a mentor to academy players, including working with the U21 and U18 cohorts.
Asked in an interview on YouTube channel ‘Golf Life’ about the apparent snub by Chelsea’s hierarchy, Terry, 45, said that he was “not annoyed, probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that 21s group that went over.
“So even if I didn’t take the team — Calum took the team, did really well, got a result — I feel like I should have been part of that.
“People have to make decisions. I love it when people make decisions and they go ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Clearly the ownership or whoever made those decisions, the sporting directors, have gone ‘No’, not to include me. I don’t know why.”
When Liam Rosenior was appointed Chelsea’s permanent head coach on January 6, a decision was soon made to promote McFarlane from the U21s to full-time assistant coach with the senior team.
