Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal last night was very disappointing as it saw the Blues dumped out of the Carabao Cup.
Interestingly, it was also a turning point in terms of stats for Chelsea. WhoScored’s rating system for the season now has Wesley Fofana as the top rated Blue for the reason with 7.10, overtaking Moises Caicedo’s 7.07 thanks to their 6.57 and 6.45 ratings respectively.
If Chelsea hadn’t conceded the 98th minute winner, which they only allowed because they had thrown every outfield player forward, one can only imagine that Fofana’s rating would have been far higher thanks to the clear sheet.

The majority of fans would still have Caicedo as their runaway leader for player of the year, but this is just a reminder of how good Fofana is when he’s on the pitch. Last night he not only stayed solid defensively, he also showed his superb athleticism as the game opened up, striding forward as an overlapping right back at times.
He won a superb 6 aerial duels, essential against this Arsenal team, and had a pass accuracy over 90%.
Certainly both are showing they can be building blocks of a top team if they both stay fit. As the fixtures thin out a little, Fofana should be able to play in a greater proportion of our games.
Chelsea are gambling on the fitness of Romeo Lavia for the rest of this season after not adding another central midfielder in January. Dario Essugo may not be back until March.
Mamadou Sarr was Chelsea’s only first team addition in January, and we reckon he’s going to get a fair bit of playing time before the end of the season. Why? You can read all about it here.
