Paul Merson was at the centre of some controversy with Chelsea fans this week when he criticised the way the team set up against Arsenal.

Now he’s been talking about Cole Palmer’s poor form, and has blamed it in part on the departure of Nicolas Jackson, who went to Bayern Munich on loan.

Merson says Palmer “misses” striker

Nicolas Jackson holds up a Bayern shirt ahead of his move.

“I like Palmer, but Palmer misses Jackson,” Merson said on the latest episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast.

“Jackson made Palmer, and Palmer made Jackson. People used to slaughter Jackson, ‘oh he’s no good, he misses chance’. You’d love to play with Jackson, because he always went that way [points to the left]. He’s like you [Ian] Wrighty, do you know what I mean? He’d come and he’d go.

“When they go like that, everybody drops off and then I’m the [number] 10, I can get on the ball. You watch Palmer now, he puts his foot on the ball and there’s nothing there. Joao Pedro wants to come this way [deeper] and there’s no movement.”

We’d have to agree – Jackson’s runs in behind were perfect for Palmer. There is still potential for JP to develop the same chemistry, but Liam Rosenior needs time in training to develop it.

Benoit Badiashile is increasingly looking like he’s up for sale this summer, with one source saying Chelsea are just looking for €35m to move him on, with a number of teams interested

Chelsea’s game against Wolves will see them as heavy favourites – and that’s exactly what they need to be worried about. Liam Rosenior has had some great results so far, it would be brutal to slip up now.
